Diabetes in Pregnancy

Mother with childrenThe Diabetes in Pregnancy Program was started in August 2001 by the Division of Maternal Fetal Medicine in the Department of Obstetrics & Gynecology, and is an officially recognized program by the American Diabetic Association. The goal of the program is to provide early intervention and followup of pregnant women with pre-gestational and gestational diabetes. The multi-disciplinary team consists of maternal fetal medicine specialists, a nurse practitioner/diabetes educator, a dietician and a social worker. The multi-disciplinary team approach allows patients to receive diabetes education immediately following diagnosis and intensive monitoring of blood glucose and maternal/fetal wellbeing. There is an ongoing dialogue between the patient, the diabetes specialists and the primary care provider regarding blood glucose control, fetal growth and maternal-fetal wellbeing.
